What is Mantra?

Mantra is a Sanskrit (old language in India) and consists of the root work man – “to think” and “tra”, meaning instruments. Hence the literal translation of Mantra would be “instrument of thought” or “instrument of the mind”

There are many popular mantras – Om is probably the most popular one. Mantras can either be a simple one syllable one like “Om” or much longer one with many words.

Mantras are used in meditation as a way to quieten the mind. Think of it as a tool used to quieten the constant insistent chatter of the mind so you can relax the mind and your body, release stress etc.
